National Science Day (28th February)
“In
the history of science, we often find that the study of some natural phenomenon
has been the starting point in the development of a new branch of knowledge.” –

National Science Day (28th February): Theme, Significance & History
Introduction:
National
Science Day is celebrated in India every year
on 28th February since 1986. Professor CV Raman
(Chandrasekhar Venkataraman) made an outstanding scientific discovery on
this day in 1928 in Kolkata, which is known as the "Raman
Effect". C.V. Raman's discovery came to the fore on 28th
February 1930. For this reason, 28th February is celebrated as National
Science Day. For this work he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
History of National Science Day:
28th
February is celebrated as National Science Day (NSD) in
India every year. National Science Day is celebrated to
commemorate the discovery of the 'Raman Effect', for which Sir C.V.
Raman won the Nobel Prize. This was the first Nobel Prize for
India in the field of science.
Sir
Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman worked at the Indian
Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, West Bengal, India from
1907 to 1933, during which he researched many topics in Physics,
including the Raman Effect (when passing through various materials, effect
on the scattering of light) became his great success and discovery which is
marked in Indian history.
The
National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked
the Government of India to designate 28th February as National
Science Day, which was accepted by the then Government of India and
declared as National Science Day in 1986. National Council for
Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and
Technology (DST) is the nodal agency for celebrating and coordinating the NSD
especially in scientific institutions and research laboratories throughout the
country. The first National Science Day was celebrated on 28th
February 1987.
“Science has made us gods even before we are worthy of being men.”
Objectives of National Science Day:
The
basic objective of this day is to attract students towards science,
to inspire them for new experiments in the field of science and
to make them aware of science and scientific achievements. On
this day, programmes related to scientific activities are organized in Science
Institutes, Laboratories, Science Academies, Schools, Colleges
and Training Institutes. The "Raman Effect" is an
effective tool in the study of the molecular structure of chemicals.
National
Science Day is a call for continuous advancement
of science in the country, its main objective is to clear the misconceptions
prevailing in the minds of people about nuclear energy. And only by its
development we can make the life of the people of the society happier.
Significance of National
Science Day:
Scientists
have invented many new technologies with the help of science,
which has made human life even better. If you assess, from waking up to going
to bed again, you use inventions of science and technology every day. Everything
from space to computers, mobiles, robots etc. is the
product of science which is very important in human life. In today's time students
are studying via digital classes in schools, all this has been possible only
with the help of science. Our country has seen several great scientists, who
have left an indelible mark in the field of science at world level. To
celebrate the great inventions of Sir C.V. Raman in the field of
science, every year "National Science Day" is celebrated in
our country.
How National Science Day is Celebrated?
National
Science Day is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm
all over India. Meanwhile, various Science Working Models & Projects
etc. are displayed by the students of schools and colleges enthusiastically. Science
Workshops are organized for students to explain the significance of science
and to make them contribute in future. Along with this, National and State Science
Institutes give information about their new researches in Science
Conclaves.
Various
activities are organized by NCRA and GMRT in the celebration of National
Science Day to recognize their main Research Activities in the field
of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics. In order to publicize science
and technology in the country, many programmes are organized for the
general public and students.
The
Minister of Science and Technology delivers a message to
the students, scientists, researchers and common
citizens of the nation through his speech on this day.
National Science Day Events/Activities:
Many
special programmes are organized across the country on this day by the National
Council for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Science and
Technology (NCSTC). Various programmes are organized in schools, colleges
or training institutes. During this, Speech, Essay, Writing
or Quiz Competitions are also conducted. Simultaneously, Science Exhibitions,
Seminars and Symposiums are also organized.
National
Science Day is celebrated every year as one of the
main science festivals in India during which school and college students
exhibit various Science Projects as well as National and State Science
Institutes display their latest research. The event will include Public Speeches,
Radio-TV Talk Shows, Science Film Exhibitions, theme and
concept Science Exhibitions, Night Sky Viewing, Live Projects
and Research Exhibitions, Discussions, Science Question-and-Answer
Competitions, Speeches, Science Working Model Exhibition etc.
National Science Day Theme: 2022
This
year Science Day is being celebrated with a special theme. Union Science and
Technology Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh launched the theme of National
Science Day-2022. The theme of this year is 'Integrated Approach in
Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'.
National Science Day Theme: 2021
In
2021, the day was observed under the theme: 'Future of STI (Science,
Technology and Innovations)- Impacts on Education, Skills and Work'.
National Science Day Theme: 2020
The
Theme of National Science Day-2020 is “Women in Science”. This means
the role of women in science. This is also the identity of today's
environment and also the need.
Objectives
of celebrating National Science Day:
Ø National Science Day is celebrated every year to spread a message about the importance of scientific application in the daily life of the people.
Ø To display all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare.
Ø To discuss all the issues for the development of science and to apply new technology.
Ø To give a chance to the scientific minded citizens in the country.
Ø popularizing science and technology.
“We
need a spirit of victory, a spirit that will carry us to our rightful place
under the sun, a spirit which can recognize that we, as inheritors of a proud
civilization, are entitled to our rightful place on this planet. If that
indomitable spirit were to arise, nothing can hold us from achieving our rightful
destiny.” – C. V. Raman
