Meaning of Our Life

 What is the meaning or purpose of our life?

 

The answer of this question is highly complex. Each individual has different connotation of life.

A better knowledge of the variety of life and manners of the people of the world give us a correct knowledge, sharpens our minds, broadens our sympathies and makes us more tolerant.

 

Whatever we do is returned to us in an increased quantity, in much the same way as a farmer's labours and his seeds are returned to him in the form of the yield of his crop.

There is a cycle of fortune also in which misery is followed by happiness. No misery is permanent; it must eventually give way to happiness. One must be on the look-out and constantly vigilant. Carelessness in the beginning becomes a source of great trouble and misery in the end.

 

Carlyle preached the message of the sanctity of work in the Victorian period: 'Work is noble, all work is noble and work alone is noble.' Ease-loving and work shirking nations, like individuals, are likely to remain poor and weak and a burden to others.

 

A Sanskrit poet advises us to burn like a torch, even if it is for a moment, not to smoulder like a heap of husk throughout night without a spark. One crowned hour of glorious existence is worth an age without a name. A glorious life that radiates what Mathew Arnold calls 'sweetness and light' is preferable to a dull, prolonged, smouldering and unsparkling life. The value of our life lies not in how long we live but in what we do.

 

Every man commits mistakes. Great teachers of humanity have taught the lesson of forgiveness. We should be tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant and merciful towards the absurd.

 

Opportunities come only once in a blue moon and it is the duty of man to avail them then and there. Today is very important.

One should do one's duty earnestly and whole-heartedly and leave the reward to God. "Duty is the grandest of ideas because it implies the idea of God, of the soul, of liberty, of responsibility and of immortality."
