Environmental Sustainability: The Need Of The Hour

Environmental Sustainability: The Need Of The Hour

 (Workshop on Environmental Sustainability)

“I don’t want to protect the environment,
I want to create a world
Where the environment
Doesn’t need protecting."

A workshop on Environmental Sustainability was conducted for the students of Classes-VI & VII by Mr. David C. Weeks, the Director of Global Education, Community Service from Glenelg Country School, Maryland, USA.

Mr. David C. Weeks was welcomed with a bouquet by the Principal. The presentation started with Mr. David Week’s travels, his experiences, defining environmental sustainability and what the students can do to bring the change in the environment as an individual. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change.”

He gave his key words to the students in the form of 4C’S:

Consideration: Attitude, Knowledge & Skills

Collaboration: Working together on a project
Commitment: Dedication to a cause or a project
                                    Celebration: Praise for accomplishment

In the discussion he emphasized that the only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment is to get everybody involved. The real cure for environmental problems is to understand that our job is to salvage Mother Nature. Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land.

He quoted: “A man of words not of deeds is a garden full of weeds.”

The students asked questions related to environmental sustainability where he guided the students to be a role model to bring a change in the world. He gave a message that economic growth and environmental protection can and should go hand in hand.

“The future will either be green or not at all.”

He explained that plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves. He concluded with a note that “Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean. Plant more and more trees.”

A vote of thanks was proposed by the Middle School Coordinator in which she thanked Mr. David Weeks and his team for conducting such wonderful workshop and inspiring the students regarding environmental sustainability.
