Empathy & Resilience
(WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPING EMPATHY & BUILDING RESILIENCE)
“Empathy, humanity and support for each other is more
important than revenue, than growth.”
The current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic
is bringing an uncontrollable devastating psychological impact on children’s
minds. Where the spirits are breaking and hope is diminishing, let us commit to
mitigate the pandemic impact and inculcate two important skills in children: empathy
and resilience to prepare them for a bright future.
The Heritage School organized two workshops for its students of classes-
3rd to 8th based on these important skills:
Empathy is the ability to understand how someone will feel due to our actions and
to understand the way a situation might make a person feel and hence respond
with care. Empathy is the root of all healthy relationships. When a
child learns to be empathetic, he/ she can learn self-control and be
more watchful towards his/her own actions. It plays a major role in controlling
emotions and managing stress.
Empathy is a quality that is desired by all, but very few know how to give and
accept it. While our world is full of selfish people, this quality is seen in
very few people. But it is needed by most of the people. Because of which it
becomes necessary that we transmit this quality to the next generation. Empathy
is not only about understanding the feelings of others, but also understanding
and respecting the feelings of others. In simple words, compassion, respect and
understanding are empathy. While some children are soft hearted from
birth, some children develop this quality from their family. You too can
develop empathy in your child.
“Resilience
is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had
before.”
Resilience is the ability to bounce back even after facing several obstacles in life.
Students who develop resilience are better able to
face disappointment, accept failures, learn from mistakes,
cope with loss, manage stress, adapt to change, never be
reluctant to try again, emerge from challenging experiences with
a positive sense and most importantly - believe in themselves.
Through the interesting activities of the 2 hour
workshop, the resource person put together several activities related to ‘Empathy’.
In this workshop, the students learnt that they must not behave in a way with
others which they don’t like for themselves.
The students learnt the true and practical meaning
of resilience, its importance in daily life and ways to build
resilience. A resilient child develops perseverance, a never give up
attitude and a growth mindset.
This workshop provided detailed guidelines to the students
who attended the workshop in very inspiring activities. All the necessary
resources such as video/ PPT/ display resource/ handouts/ worksheets/ Parents’
Circular etc related to the activities were distributed to the students for
their parents.
