School Report on English Debate Competition

School Report on English Debate Competition

'Those who can not understand how to put their thoughts on ice, should not enter into the heat of debate.'

We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity. To hone public speaking skills of the students and teach them to be articulate while expressing their opinions, an Inter House English Debate Competition for classes- 6th to 10th was organized on 7th December 2019 (Saturday).

The students of different Houses of the school spoke on the topic "Junk Food Should Be Banned In Schools?" or "Computer & Mobile Games Make Children Violent & Lazy".

The participants spoke for both 'For' and 'Against' the motion and debated enthusiastically. The teams were well prepared and undoubtedly convinced the audience of their beliefs and views. The participants armed with statistics and data made their arguments more emphatic with their righteous facial expressions and voice modulations. They used various skills like overstatement, definition, rhetoric, irony etc. to convince the audience & exhibited great oratorical skills.

The highlight of the event was the question answer round, as a volley of questions were answered confidently by both the sides, inviting counter questions which were aptly answered by witty and vivacious speakers. The Debate Competition ignited brilliancy in expressions.

The judgement parameters were: Content, Confidence & Presentation, Fluency, Pronunciation & Memory, and Rebuttal Session Performance. The competition was an enthralling experience for the speakers as well as audience.

Vote of Thanks was proposed by the Academic Coordinator (Senior) & Head of English Department, Ms Nita Pathak. The Principal of the school addressed the gathering & appreciated the witty presentations of the participants. She acknowledged their oratory skills.

‘Healthy debating enforces critical thinking principles- looking at things from the different angles, with increased perspective and less prejudgment.’
