How to Dry Clean Clothes at Home

You can clean your expensive and labelled ‘Dry Cleaning Only’ label at home. For this, you have to adopt some tips.

Dry cleaning is a very expensive task and in such a situation, if many clothes have to be dry cleaned, then there is a significant setback in the budget. These days, due to Corona epidemic, there is a lot of problem in getting clothes dry cleaned, some shops are open, some are not and there is a lot of risk in sending our clothes out. In such a situation, if you are thinking of cleaning your clothes at home, but if afraid that the clothes may get spoiled, then by taking a few necessary precautions you can dry clean them at home.

Sometimes dry cleaning only means that they can be protected from water or hard detergents. Such clothes can be easily cleaned at home in some way or the other.

Important Note:  It needs to be kept in mind that these home cleaning methods can never be a replacement for professional dry cleaning. Yes, if the clothes are not too dirty then it can reduce the fact that those clothes do not go for dry cleaning more often and sometimes they can be cleaned at home.

If you are thinking of dry cleaning clothes at home, first sort your clothes by washing which ones can be washed with water, which are not worth detergent at all, which can be cleaned at home or which clothes should not be cleaned at home. Even if you have a washing machine in your house, keep in mind that not to wash ‘dry clean clothes’ in the washing machine. It will damage the fabric, colour and the embroidery.

 

How to choose clothes that should be washed at home-

If your label says 'dry-clean-only' then it does not mean that there is no way to wash it in the house. Silk saris, polyester, cotton, linen, woollen clothes, sweaters, taffeta fabric etc. can be easily washed at home. Yes, clothes that have a cane, such as a heavy-embroidered lehenga, or fur and feather clothes, needs to go for dry clean.

 

How to identify clothes for wash:

To bifurcate which cloth can be washed at home, try applying a little water and detergent at one place with the help of cotton especially at a place that is not much visible. In that situation, if you see any damage to your clothes, then you should not wash it at home and should be sent for professional dry cleaning, if you do not see any damage or discolouring, then it can be washed at home.

How to clean-

Dry clean clothes should never be washed in a machine. Follow some easy steps for cleaning them at home-

1. Soak in cold water for only half an hour. Never use hot water for this as it will spoil clothes. Never put dry clean clothes in hot water.

2. Common detergents will not work. For washing dry clean clothes, use mild detergent such as Genteel, Easy wash, Vanish etc. You can also use mild shampoo for this. You won't believe it, but the best shampoo for hair can easily clean your dry clean clothes too.

3. Take your clothes out of the bucket comfortably and rub it with the fingertips where the stain is. Do not use any brush. If there is a very deep stain, take a little detergent (mild) and rub it lightly on the place with a toothbrush.

4. Never use dryer for these clothes. Allow them to air dry. You can remove them by wrapping them lightly in a towel.

This can clean common clothes that are not so dirty.

 

Home Dry Cleaning Kit-

If there is too much stain, you can also use a home dry cleaning kit. It is easily available in the market. You do not have to work too hard for this. It comes with a chemical solution that is applied only to the stain. For better cleaning a good quality home dry cleaning kit needs to be purchased.

 

Salt Scrub-

Salt scrub also works like this. Take these dry cleaning clothes for cleaning and clean the clothes with salt scrub. Be careful not to use body scrubs on clothes.

Salt kept in the kitchen will come in handy. If you want to remove the stain from the remover, then scrub it on the cloth with the help of a handkerchief. When scrubbed all over the cloth, clean it separately. This may work on the blazers, coat or jackets etc. Do not use it on woollen clothes.

These methods will work on mild stains, but if you find that your clothes are quite dirty and cannot be cleaned at all, then take professional help. But you can clean all the sweaters, coats, silk saris, etc. which are not too dirty at home by using home dry cleaning kit.
