World Nature Conservation Day (28 July): Theme, History & Measures

“The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship.

Introduction:

World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated internationally every year on 28 July. On this day a pledge is taken to protect the endangered species and flora. We often see that many types of campaigns are also run for the conservation of nature, like plantation is done somewhere and measures like saving water are taken somewhere. But all this is rarely seen personally. When we take so much from nature, then we also have a duty to do something for its conservation. You too can do a lot towards nature on a personal level in many ways.

World Nature Environment Day 2022: Theme

The theme is “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet". Urging people to work towards a sustainable planet, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu wrote, “On World Nature Conservation Day, let us resolve to protect and conserve our natural resources & work towards creating a more sustainable planet.

World Nature Environment Day 2021: Theme

Every year a unique theme is determined by UNO, organizations and environmentalists. Since we are presently in the centre of a pandemic, no particular theme as such has been introduced this year. We have to preserve and protect Nature. Everyone must promote environment friendly activities to lead a Green Lifestyle.

Importance of Environmental Protection:

Environmental protection is closely related to the life of all living beings and all the natural surroundings of this earth. The whole earth is getting polluted due to pollution and the end of human civilization is visible in the near future. Keeping this situation in mind, in 1992, 'Earth Conference' of 174 countries of the world was organized in Brazil. After this, by organizing the Earth Conference in Johannesburg in 2002, many measures were suggested to all the countries of the world to pay attention to environmental protection.

History of World Nature Conservation Day:

In 1992, the Earth Conference held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) talked about nature conservation. The standard definition of biodiversity was adopted in this conference.

World nature Conservation Day was celebrated to protect all the sources of biodiversity, such as inter-regional, terrestrial, oceanic and other aquatic ecosystems. The increasing temperature in the world due to global warming is also very responsible for the environment. Many islands and island countries located in the sea are on the verge of drowning due to global warming. In view of this, a conference was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 in which 174 countries participated.

In 2002, the Earth Conference was held in Johannesburg, and many measures were suggested to all the countries of the world to pay attention to environmental protection. And there is an attempt to bring the temperature up to 1.5.

Simple Measures to Conserve Nature:

First Task: Conserve Water:

·        Do not misuse water.

·        Use water saving methods.

·        Stop water getting wasted anywhere.

Second Task: Conserving Energy:

·        For this you have to save as much electricity as possible.

·        Turn off unnecessary electrical appliances in the house.

·        If natural light is coming in the house during the day, then turn off the light when it is not needed.

·        You can also save electricity by using less AC.

Third Task: Planting:

·        You can plant saplings in your home or park.

·        Inspire more people for this so that more and more greenery can be brought.

·        Plantation of trees on a large scale will reduce pollution and provide oxygen.

·        It can also be started as a tradition, like planting a plant on the birthday.

Fourth Task: Growing Fruits and Vegetables:

·        You can grow fruits and vegetables at home.

·        Curry leaves, coriander, tomatoes can be grown in small pots.

·        You can also raise beans, legumes, brinjals etc. at home garden.

Fifth Task: Reduce Garbage:

·        Keep your surroundings clean.

·        Work on reducing the amount of litter.

·        Use material that can later decompose and be used for other purposes.

·        Do not use plastic.

·        Work on reducing household waste.

·        Think about how the garbage can be disposed of properly.

·        Use fruit and vegetable peels as manure.

Sixth task: Reduce air pollution:

·        Do not burn garbage and do not smoke.

·        Minimize use of motor vehicles.

·        If you do not want to go far away from home, then go on foot or use a bicycle.

·        Get your vehicle checked regularly to check air pollution.

Seventh Task: Awareness:

·        In the internet age, if we pay all our bills online then it will not only save our time but also paper as well as petrol – diesel.

·        Use techniques that have a positive relationship with nature. Like (i) use of organic manure (ii) less use of canned material.

·        Promote climate-improving technologies.

·        Resist the conspiracies to destroy the mountain. Use natural items.

Adopt all these measures in your habit and keep teaching them to your children as your responsibility towards Mother Nature.

School Report:

On this day, Springfield School made a conscious effort in contributing to nature conservation. With the aim to make the students understand the adverse effects of harming the natural elements, a Workshop was planned on World Nature Conservation Day on 28 July in the school auditorium. It was an initiative towards environmental sustainability.

The activities of the workshop made the students understand the true meaning of ‘Sustainability’ and inculcate environment-friendly habits to lead a Green Lifestyle.  The students realized the consequences of wasting / over using natural resources, harming animals and birds, destroying trees and flowers and use of plastic. The workshop included the students of age group: 6 to 10 years, i.e. from Class 1 to 5. This workshop provided detailed guidelines to the students. All the necessary resources such as video/ PPT/ display resource/ handouts/ worksheets/ Parents’ Circular etc. were given to each student to spread the awareness among parents too.

Several Activities were organized for the Primary students:

Class-1: Colouring the Activity Sheets

Class-2: Drawing & Sketching

Class-3: Fancy Dress

Class-4: Slogan Writing

Class-5: Role Play/ Skit /Play / Drama

Conclusion:

Celebrated on July 28 each year, World Nature Conservation Day recognizes that a healthy environment is the foundation for a stable society and to ensure the well-being of mankind, we all wisely manage our natural resources.  We all depend on natural resources like water, air, soil, minerals, trees, animals, food, and gas to live our daily lives. To keep the balance in the natural world, we must also help various species to continue to exist.
